From 2014 to 2018 the In Flanders Fields Museum worked on a series of storytelling concerts within GoneWest, the centenary commemoration programme of the province of West Flanders. The Notices to the Public zoomed in on local war histories. For the organisation of these concerts the museum worked together with local organisations or associations, and for the performance the band Kotjesvolk was extended with changing companies of musicians who in one way or another could recognize themselves in the story. Each time a broad and interested local audience showed up to (re)listen to and (re)record their own history.
Under the title Root Notes the In Flanders Fields Museum, together with the province, wants to continue this participative heritage practice, even after the centenary, as a special form of sharing history and knowledge.
What we are (still) looking for
In 2020 the temporary exhibition Feniks puts the reconstruction at the centre of the museum's activities. In the autumn, a new narrative concert will be created that will take this theme as its guiding principle. To this end, we are looking for a (family) story, and/or a place in West Flanders where the war and reconstruction story is less well known or unknown.
