About

On the occasion of the crowdfunding for the preservation and restoration of Yorkshire Trench, and of the new investments of the In Flanders Fields Museum, Westtoer and Tourism Flanders in the enhanced presentation of the Northern Ypres Salient, the VIFF will organise an according remembrance.

In the presence of the West Yorkshire Police Band, this ceremony will commemorate five victims from West Yorkshire. They fell on 14 August 1915 near Klein Zwaanhof - today the entry point for the exploration of the North Ypres Salient.

Captain Maynard Percy Andrews
Private Charles Edward Lee
Lance-Corporal James Riach
Private John Thomas Aked
Corporal Norman Hirst

The remembrance will take place at these men's graves in Colne Valley Cemetery, and at the landscape site Yorkshire Trench & Dugout.

The name Yorkshire Trench appeared on military staff maps from March 1917, referring to the presence of the 49th (West Riding) Division in this sector from July to December 1915. Many men who lived or were born in Yorkshire served in this division. Nearly 1,200 of them died during this period. The name of the trench and dugout was given in their honour a year and a half later.
